We also devise the very first energy efficient inter cluster communication algorithm for Postbox DTN. This paper proposes an approach for intra cluster communication using ECOPs that aims to further lower the energy consumption and the chances of single-point-of-failure in the network. The Energy Conserving Postbox (ECOP) DTN uses a trio of time-multiplexed ECOPs in a bid to reduce energy consumption and overhead for the Postboxes. The Postbox DTN is a variant of the classical DTN wherein there are always ON persistent nodes called Postboxes in a cluster via which all other nodes communicate. Due to unavailability of end-to-end routing paths, energy exhausted nodes and unreliable communication resources, traditional routing strategies failed to connect, resulting in a plethora of research work for DTN protocols. Gradually the concept gave way to a terrestrial DTN that was to cement the communication gaps in networks that were heterogeneous and resource challenged in nature. The Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) was designed first as a means to communicate between interplanetary bodies in space. This paper studies the effect of applying SECA on MIA-DTN and presents a comprehensive analysis with simulation results to justify the proposal. MIA-DTN has two pre-existing routing protocols tailor made for it, which are energy unconscious.
To achieve this it employs two threshold values. SECA administers routing of messages to nodes with sufficient remaining energy levels such that the bulk of messages forwarded are in proportion to the receiver’s energy level. As such we propose to apply the Simplistic Energy Conscious Approach (SECA) on this network. Like any other variant of DTN, it is crippled by the “energy drainage” issue. One such variation is the Monitor Incorporated Adaptive DTN (MIA-DTN), which has special monitor nodes to keep an eye on the performance of the other nodes in the network.
